Transformation of Surrey County Council over the last 3 years has put the authority in a strong financial position. This has enabled a substantial increase to Highways in the Budget this week, including an additional £264m on highways, a £48m investment in low emission buses and a boost to sustainable travel.

This budget increase provides an additional £12 million of Capital funding and £900k of Revenue funding to Local and Joint Committees over the next three years to tackle resident road safety priorities. Surrey’s Local and Joint Committees will each see an average funding increase of 240%, since 2019/20.

Tim Oliver, Leader of Surrey County Council said, “The hard work and dedication of Surrey County Council over the last three years has seen us deliver around £250m of year-on-year efficiencies. Getting our finances in order means that we can set a balanced budget, while investing in what really matters to our residents.”

Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Transport added, “This is great news that we continue to invest significant sums in improving our roads and pavements, even against the challenges of meeting the increased demand for services to our more vulnerable residents.”

Surrey County Council continues to improve and invest in its roads, including a recent £264m investment in highways to boost active travel. This will help ensure that the Council achieves its ambitions of making journeys across the county easier, more predictable and safer, while improving the lives of all residents.
